How To Start Deep Cleaning Your House

I am a erstwhile cleaning professional and a long-fourth dimension homemaker. I have had many years to acquire the tricks of the trade.

Yes, it's really possible to clean your entire house in four hours or less

Yes, it's actually possible to clean your unabridged house in four hours or less

Cleaning Tips From a Professional person Cleaner

You tin can clean virtually any house in about four hours a week. I learned this when I had my ain residential house-cleaning business. Ane reason that cleaning other people's houses is a lot easier than cleaning your own, is that you're not involved in the mess. Nothing is personal and you don't get distracted while you're cleaning.

You lot can clean your own business firm but equally efficiently if you lot don't go distracted. Yous can also save coin instead of hiring a professional house-cleaning service.

My Seven-Stride Method

  1. Set a cleaning schedule
  2. Start cleaning the bathrooms
  3. Change the bedding
  4. Clean ceilings and walls
  5. End cleaning the bathrooms
  6. Dust
  7. Vaccum and mop

Learn How to Prioritize Your Cleaning Needs

Household chores like intensive kitchen cleaning and laundry are ameliorate left for another time as they can distract you lot from your mission. I presume the dishes are generally done and counters wiped down every twenty-four hour period.

If you are efficient, yous can run the dishwasher or washing automobile while you focus on the tasks at hand. We will talk almost some techniques to tackle these chores towards the end. I do advise including the kitchen when y'all are clearing cobwebs, dusting and cleaning floors.

Cleaning Supplies Y'all Will Need

It will brand your job simpler if you take quick access to everything you need. It is a good thought to use a storage caddy or a saucepan with a handle so you tin can comport your supplies from room to room.

In your cleaning caddy you should accept:

  • Sponge (with a scrubby side)
  • Cotton wool rags (I like cloth diapers or onetime terrycloth washcloths. Former t shirts make good rags too. If you apply sometime towels or clothing, cut them up so it's easy to tell that they have been retired.)
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Paper towels
  • Bathroom cleaner
  • Glass cleaner
  • Piece of furniture polish
  • Safe gloves
  • Floor cleaner and/or polish

A Lilliputian Advice Nigh Cloths and Rags

  • Microfiber cloths are very popular, and they are keen for some jobs. They piece of work fine for dry dusting, cleaning woodwork, and final polishing. However, they are not very absorbent. Most of the time yous will want to use them either dry or slightly clammy. They are not good for drying dishes, just they are groovy for rubbing off water spots. If y'all utilise spray cleaner and a microfiber fabric, it will not dry the surface very well. In that example you are better off to use a paper towel or a cotton cloth or rag.
  • Paper towels are practiced for very nasty or greasy messes that will contaminate your sponge or rag, things like the outside of the toilet. On the top of your stove you can use a newspaper towel for the initial clean-up so movement on to a sponge or rag.
  • Long-handled duster
  • Vacuum cleaner
  • Broom
  • Grit mop
  • Wet mop

Buy a Decent Vacuum Cleaner

For years I had problems with vacuum cleaners. I bought 1 cheap one after the other. It seemed similar I was spending more than time unclogging them than I was vacuuming.

I finally bought myself a Kenmore canister vacuum. I've had information technology for ten years at present, and information technology solved about of my bug. Of form, it yet needs maintenance. As long as I empty the bags when needed and clean the filters it has proficient suction. The hose finally cracked a couple of years ago, merely I was able to get a replacement on ebay.

I would warn confronting the bagless vacuums, I never had any luck with those, and emptying the dirt cup is a messy job. Uprights seem appealing and like shooting fish in a barrel to use, but if there'southward a clog it's difficult to get to information technology.

How to Deep-Make clean Your House Fast

If the house has not been kept upwardly, yous will probably find a lot of dusty corners that haven't been cleaned in a while the outset time you make clean. This is what I found any time I got a new customer, no matter how tidy the house looked.

Cleaning vs. Clearing Clutter

The first thing to understand is that there's a difference betwixt immigration clutter and cleaning. A lot of times when we're cleaning our own houses, nosotros do both at the same time, but this is not the nearly efficient way.

When a professional person cleaner comes in, the business firm is generally expected to exist "picked up." If I would come in to a house to clean it and in that location was stuff lying around, I would simply make piles for the homeowner to sort out subsequently.

Cleaning to Remove Dust Mites

Information technology's important to clean more oft throughout the year rather than simply a little "spring cleaning. "Those untouched areas can harbor grit, mites and other irritants that should be removed regularly for health and wellness.

Dust mites can cause allergies and asthma. They like to alive in fabrics and soft bedding, like mattresses, pillows, carpets, rugs and blankets. This is why weekly cleaning is important.

Step 1: Set a Cleaning Schedule or Routine

The key to keeping your house clean is organization and consistency. If you stick to a cleaning schedule and do the entire business firm each week, y'all will probably observe that it will accept you less time to do your basic cleaning. And so y'all tin can catch up on those other tasks that you don't need to do weekly.

You might want to keep a running list of those, so they don't get disregarded. Some of these tasks might include cleaning:

  • the inside of the refrigerator
  • stove
  • oven
  • kitchen cabinets
  • medicine chiffonier
  • light fixtures
  • books on book shelves
  • behind and under heavy furniture

Pace 2: Start Cleaning the Bathrooms

The first thing I do is to start on all of the bathrooms at once. Remove everything from the tubs and showers and spray them with the bathroom cleaner you lot prefer and leave them to soak. Practice the same with the toilet bowls. Put the cleaning products in and give them an initial swish with the castor. This is a good time to have a trash pocketbook with yous and empty all of the waste product baskets.

Pace iii: Change the Bedding

Gather the make clean sheets and pillowcases yous will need for all bedrooms. Go to each room, strip the sheets and remake the bed. Gather all the soiled sheets and have them to the laundry room.

Information technology is important to make the beds before dusting the ceilings in the bedrooms. This avoids getting dust under the covers. If the ceiling is particularly dusty, you lot may want to encompass the freshly made bed with a sheet while dusting the ceiling.

Step 4: Clean Ceilings and Walls From Top to Bottom

While my bathroom-cleaner products are working in the bathrooms, I start on cobwebs and grit on the ceilings, corners and door jambs, and piece of work methodically around each room. Work your mode all the way downwardly the walls to the baseboards. A Webster works OK for corners, but I call back it works meliorate if you lot encompass it with a cloth—the cloth is just improve at wiping off those sticky webs.

I similar to use a Casabella Everywhere Duster for the walls and ceiling. This is a better alternative than your standard plume duster because information technology's made of microfiber and information technology's washable. If yous don't accept one, y'all might try your favorite microfiber mop. Before they were bachelor, I used to use a broom with an old towel tied over it to sweep the ceiling. Clean light fixtures and fan blades while you're doing this.

When to Make clean Low-cal Fixtures

If you have low-cal fixtures that are really dirty or total of bugs, y'all won't be able to take them all down and launder them within your four-hour time period. For that blazon of chore, you tin do ane or two of them a week until they're all caught upwards.

A skillful way to make clean glass shades on a light fixture is the dishwasher. Information technology is easier and more thorough than washing them past hand.

Step v: Finish Cleaning the Bathrooms

By the time you lot've removed all the webs and grit, you're gear up to finish the bathrooms. I used to use a broom to scrub tubs and showers, but at present Mr. Clean makes a nice tool for cleaning the bathroom. It is called the Magic Attain. It does a good job of scrubbing and you tin reach the whole shower easily without throwing your back out.

When you are through cleaning, put all the shampoos and things dorsum in the shower and do the vanity and mirror, scrub the sink and polish all the fixtures.

Clean the Toilet Bowl

Now you lot are gear up to finish cleaning the toilet bowls. Don't forget the safe gloves for that job. I use a minor wastebasket with a bleach solution in it to disinfect the toilet basin castor after apply. Paper towels are adept for wiping the exterior of the toilet and the seat to avoid contaminating other cleaning cloths with bacteria.

Clean the Bathroom Floor

Make clean the floor last. I find it easier and more thorough to clean the bath floor with a rag instead of a mop.

Some Advice Most Cleaning Cloths

I go along some one-time cotton rags for jobs like cleaning the bathroom floor. Once the job is washed, those rags go straight into the washing car. One-time t shirts and towels make great rags. Cloth diapers also brand excellent cleaning rags.

Microfiber cloths are bang-up for dusting, and cleaning the fronts of cabinets, door jams, window sills and lite switch plates. They are also great for polishing chrome kitchen and bathroom fixtures, simply they are not very absorbent.

The Best Manner to Make clean Your Shower Curtain

If your shower pall has mildew, you tin can wash it in warm water on the gentle bicycle and hang it dorsum in the shower to dry.

Step 6: How to Dust Your House

Now that the difficult part is done, you're fix to commencement dusting.

  1. Furniture: Starting at the tiptop and remove all small items from the shelves and table tops. Polish wood surfaces with any oil or wax you prefer.
  2. Lamps: If the lamp shade is covered in textile, remove it and set it aside to be vacuumed. Wipe off the lamp itself and elevator it to dust underneath.
  3. Knick Knacks: Wipe each item from the shelves and coffee tables downwards before putting them back. Yous'll desire to use a separate rag with Windex or something similar for dusting those items, so they don't become smeared with oil or wax.

How to Make clean Books on Shelves

Thoroughly dusting books on shelves are another ane of those jobs that you tin accept on once every few weeks. You tin can dust the shelves and fronts and tops of the books each week, only occasionally it's good to take all the books off the shelf and dust each 1.

Step seven: Vacuum and Mop Floors

When all of the dusting is done, you're ready to vacuum. Vacuum in this order:

  1. Lamp shades: Vacuum the lamp shades and put them dorsum in place.
  2. Piece of furniture: Upholstered article of furniture should be vacuumed each calendar week every bit well.
  3. Floor corners: Use the corner tool outset to get the edges and corners of the floor. And then move on to the rugs and carpets.
  4. Hard floors: Clean the hard floors. I apply my canister vacuum cleaner for that task, only if you have an upright vacuum, you may desire to sweep.

If the linoleum or tile floors are really dirty with stuck-on dirt, I use a roller-head sponge mop and saucepan. If they are only moderately muddy, I use a slightly clammy microfiber mop. Information technology works really well. If at that place's a difficult spot, you can use a damp fabric past hand. For hard forest or laminate floor, follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning.

Laundry Tips

If you are an efficient person, you can consider running your washing machine while you clean your business firm. This might brand sense if you use your weekend for laundry and deep cleaning. I similar to wash occasional loads throughout the calendar week instead of letting laundry pile up.

Remove All Laundry From the Rooms

Before y'all begin cleaning your bathrooms and bedrooms, remove towels and bedding from these areas equally office of the picking up process, this allows you lot to attain all surfaces that would otherwise be subconscious. You can put the bedding and towels directly into the washer.

One problem with doing laundry while cleaning is that y'all risk wrinkled vesture if you don't become to the folding right away. It's non such a problem with towels and bedding.

I take a hanging rod to a higher place my washer and dryer where I hang shirts right out of the dryer. Virtually shirts will not need ironing if you practise that.

If your shelves are very sticky, you may need to spray them with an all-purpose cleaner, or some soapy water, and let them soak for a few minutes. Wipe off each canteen or container earlier putting information technology back. In this manner, make clean all of the shelves. I think information technology's more than probable that you will knock stuff on the flooring while dusting. If your vacuum is kicking up that much dust, maybe you demand a new one. However, if you are sweeping floors, sweep first, so dust.

Linda Rogers on July 22, 2020:

Curious. You dust before y'all vac and I was always taught to vac first and then dust considering vacuuming would kick upwards some dust. What are your thoughts on this?

Dust Bunny on May 10, 2020:

Please be careful using windex especially on old glass .. re cleaning mirrors question. A basic glass cleaner like Sprayaway cream glass cleaner with OUT ammonia is safe...windex is not! Just like you cannot employ windex on tinted machine windows.

Automobile windows you can not utilize windex.

Great tips, Sherry. What do you recall about using natural cleaning products like vinegar? I recently started using vinegar to clean the bathrooms. Sherry.....Very expert tips! I have a two-story dwelling house with ix major rooms and a few minor (large entrance ways & enormous closets) I'1000 afraid no affair what blazon of tips or program I followed, four hrs merely wouldn't cut information technology. Now, as my aging body moves much slower than in my youth~~I'll only labor for a couple of hours and so be kind to myself.

The truth is, I'm never really in a bustle these days anyway! I'll admit, what gets done makes me happy, what doesn't, well it can just wait until I'one thousand good and ready!

There's no way I tin do it all myself on a regular basis, and so I don't knock myself out! I have a young woman I telephone call from time to time who comes by to piece of work a few hours and lighten my load.

Your hub is excellent for young busy working Moms who never seem to have a enough hours in a day! I'1000 sure they actually appreciate what you have shared!....Peace, Paula

First-class cleaning tips! Even though I'grand a fanatic at keeping a clean house, I all the same can learn a affair or 2. And your hub gave me a lot of useful pointers.

For instance, I ever get tired of cleaning each little item on the shelves when doing the full general cleaning. It adds so much more time to the entire cleaning mean solar day. You convinced me it's okay to leave that every bit a chore to do by itself. I'k going to schedule a time to just take everything off the shelves, wipe the dust off the shelves, and clean the each detail with a clammy cloth. And so consider information technology done for the mean solar day.

Margaret Schindel from Massachusetts on June 28, 2015:

Sherry, both my parents worked outside the dwelling house, and so I grew up in a dwelling house that was cleaned professionally and never really learned to clean properly myself. When I left home I was in the corporate earth for many years and was able to afford professional housecleaning help. When I left the corporate world and could no longer afford those services, I was sick-equipped to take on those tasks myself. Your tips will prove invaluable to me. Thank you so much for sharing them!

Sergio Freddson on May 07, 2015:

I call up you're correct: doing the floors last is a great idea. It'south easy to want to get that out of the way first and do a "bottom upwards" method, but the top down works much better. If y'all can get into the habit of doing this you'll have to vacuum much less often! Thank you for sharing these tips with u.s.. http://thecleancompanyhouston.com

C E Clark from Due north Texas on August xi, 2014:

I wish my flat was so easy to clean! It has been at times, but that was a while ago. Right now I accept so much clutter and things are so disorganized that you tin can't detect the floors and surfaces to dust or vacuum! Well, about of the flat is like that anyhow.

I've been working on my part for a while and it's almost done. Withal have my desk to sort and organize and the blinds in the window adjacent to my desk to clean, then I need to bring some things back in that I took out of the room to make getting to what was left easier. One time it's done your method would very probably work well in the office as there should exist minimal clutter for the offset few weeks at least . . . :)

I honey reading articles like this one considering it gives me hope that it really can be done. I know it'due south truthful that if a person maintains their dwelling one time they have it cleaned up, information technology goes much faster and what a difference it makes.

Y'all know, considering how things have gotten so out of paw from time to time over the years, the one matter that has never, and I practise mean NEVER been a problem are my kitchen cupboards. They are admittedly ever clean and organized fifty-fifty when the residue of the house is a disaster. Fifty-fifty when I had a pantry, that too, was always ship shape. Why just that one little place in the house and everything else looks like a tornado hit?

First-class advice here and I like reading it from someone who has done it for real and knows what she'due south talking about.

Cheers for the votes pagesvoice. How overnice for your wife that you clean the house. I know there has been an ongoing controversy over whether to grit first or vacuum first. I'm squarely in the dust first camp. I think if your vacuum is throwing upwardly that much dust you need a new vacuum, and frequently there is more just dust on the surfaces, and it ends upwards on the floor. The Webster is merely a round brush on the end of a telescoping pole. At that place's an Amazon capsule for it in my hub if you want to check information technology out. Happy housekeeping.

Dennis L. Folio from New York/Pennsylvania border on September 29, 2012:

Voted up, useful and interesting. I love the way you broke down some cleaning tasks that can seem and then daunting to many of united states of america. I am curious though about a couple of things. I am clueless what a webster is. The but reason I ask is because I am the chief cook and bottle washer which, of course, includes cleaning the house. My other question surrounds dusting versus vacuuming. My wife will start to grit and I always say "No...await till I'm done vacuuming considering the cleaner throws dust in the air." Now I'm wondering if I have it backwards. Oh and you are so right near the clutter. I swear the older I take gotten the more newspaper piles I have. Alas, it is a never ending boxing.

Ataxia is a bigger problem for me. When I figure out how to deal with it I will definitely let you lot know. Nearly clutter, that'south the problem with hiring a house or apartment cleaner -- that you have to tidy all the rooms before the cleaner arrives. Have you lot done or volition you be doing a hub on efficiently decluttering?

Sometimes I plant that the people with the dirtiest houses were the easiest to please, when they left the house was dirty, when they came dwelling it was clean, what's non to like. But the people with very tidy houses would exist more likely to give information technology the "white glove treatment."

Very interesting hub. You pretty much clean the fashion I practise. I use to make clean my sister-in-law'due south firm when my youngest son was little. They had no kids and so it was very simple to make clean. They use to put a glass of water backside the door. I remember they were checking to see if I cleaned behind the door. I always looked behind every door where cobwebs like to build up. I ever did my floors by hand never used a mop now I accept to my knees just can't have it anymore. Voted up on your hub.

Super cleaning tips Sherry - I like the idea of doing all the bathrooms at once, information technology seems much more than efficient.
